Little plastic soldiers and big explosions.

Who here never had those little plastic toy soldiers? I’m pretty sure just about every guy, and some girls, had them and found great joy in staging battles. Most of us made parachutes for them, melted them with magnifying glasses, or strapped them with M80s. Whatever you did with them, you probably had them at some point in your life. Toy Soldiers, the aptly named Xbox Live Arcade game, plays upon these fond memories in the form of a World War I tower defense game.

First of all I’d like to say that I am not a fan of tower defense games, at all, but there is something about this game that kept me playing. I think if I had to nail it down, it’s the aesthetics of the game itself. Each battlefield is displayed as if it were the most expensive playset ever. They, to me, remind me of toy train setups seen in model train stores, as the detail is meticulous, and would probably last all of two seconds in the hands of a child. Each playset, as I call them, is littered with realistic foliage, or building structures. The majority of these objects cannot be destroyed but things like trees and walls can be. I would have loved more destruction on the battlefield, but it would be hard to enjoy it due to the camera angle, more on that later.

Now that I’ve talked about my favorite part of the game, let’s get into the game play element. Each level has the player defending their toy box by setting up weapon defenses. Defenses come in the form of weapon placements, the occasional tanks or airplanes, and barbed wire. Larger weapon placements require larger placement areas, naturally, while smaller can be placed on either. Money to buy and upgrade these units is gained by destroying the enemy, but the enemy only comes in set waves so it’s important to think ahead with your defenses. Failure to defend your toybox will make you lose points, lose them all and you fail the stage. During game play you can choose to pilot planes, drive tanks, or directly control on of your weapon placements. Vehicles are not always available, but when they are it is best to use them to your advantage. The strategy element of this game is nice as each stage requires a different strategy, some of them requiring the player to think several steps ahead as there will be bosses that show up which can easily overrun unwise defense choices. Knowing what to keep, what to sell off, and what to upgrade will be key in any victory.

Multiplayer takes a slightly different approach to the game style by allowing both players to send out waves of either planes, tanks, or cavalry, while the rest of the gameplay remains the same. In this sense, it feels a bit more like a simplified RTS style game. I found this mode of play keeping me on my toes as there was no end to the waves as long as the opponent had the money to send them out. I would have liked a more true RTS feel but I don’t feel as though not having that is a major detriment to how fun the game still is.

For those of you that don’t like tower defense games, you probably won’t like this game. As I stated before, they are not a style of game I like, but due to the presentation I ended up really liking this game. That’s not to say it’s all spectacular though as the camera angles available don’t allow much in the way of looking up, and there were many times that my anti-air shot down planes I didn’t even know existed. This doesn’t pose too much of a problem, in terms of gameplay but it was a little annoying to not have a free look and the only way around this is to commandeer a vehicle or weapon placement. The learning curve is also very steep with the solution only being found after trying different weapon placements, or changing things out to suit the situation. There were many times I was caught without money, or ability to defend myself properly. While there isn’t a need to beat stages in a specific way, the game won’t let up on you for mistakes. It may take several tries at a stage before you can win.

I recommend everyone give this a try, if not for the awesome set designs then perhaps the nostalgia we all have for those tiny plastic soldiers. Those soldiers we melted, blew up, launched, and got yelled at when out parents stepped on them. I hope that more games try and advance the tower defense genre like this game did, maybe I’d like them as well.

LOS ANGELES, CA – With the completion of their tenth and final episode, the cast of There Will Be Brawl (TWBB) will be celebrating in style, with cast members, fans, and media in attendance for their official wrap party for the web-series’ final episode. The cast and crew welcome everyone to attend a night of dancing, drinking, and photo ops at Club Good Hurt, located in eastern Venice.

“We wanted a way to raise the glass to our dedicated cast and crew, as well as invite fans of the show to come out and be able to chat with all of us about the project. We think this will be a fun event not only for gamers and cosplayers, but just anyone who wants to see some great performances and dance to the sets from our amazing DJs,” said TWBB co-creator Matthew Mercer.

Co-creator Zach Grafton added, “This web series was really a labor of love for all of us. We’re really excited to give something back to our hard-working team and also to shake hands with the fans who made this show so popular.”

With the TWBB cast being huge fans of cosplay (a Japanese amalgam of the words “costume” and “play”), it’s only fitting that the event is being held at Club Good Hurt, an intimate club space featuring bartenders in nurse uniforms and playful cocktails dressed up as “medicine” for its patrons. The venue boasts a dance floor and stage area, which the TWBB crew will be utilizing with their fantastic lineup of established Los Angeles performers and DJs on deck.

Live performances include The Megas, a band taking inspiration from Nintendo’s Mega Man series, and The Yuki Shundo Dance Crew lead by the illustrious choreographer Yuki Shundo. Four of Los Angeles’ premier DJs will also be spinning to keep the crowd dancing, including Poison-K, Jinrei, DO NOT FEED THE DJ, and Amaya.

About There Will Be Brawl:
TWBB is a web series designed as a dark, dramatic parody of the popular Super Smash Bros. Brawl video game for the Nintendo Wii. TWBB focuses on the heroic trio of Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach, and their battle against the corruption overtaking the Mushroom Kingdom, investigating the grisly crimes spreading across the land which threaten to tear apart the once idealistic kingdom.

TWBB creators Matthew Mercer and Zach Grafton have pooled their collective love of Nintendo’s repertoire, and launched this series as an homage to the colorful characters of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

The complete series of TWBB can be found currently broadcasting on The Escapist.
